Privacy Policy

This policy describes the information that may be collected during a visit to Buchanan County Criminal History, why it is used, and the limited circumstances in which another party may receive it. It also explains how outside search tools differ from this site. By continuing to browse or use a page, you accept the practices stated in this policy.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or place entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside company that operates that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its own results. Buchanan County Criminal History does not keep or record those search terms on its systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

When you send an email, the message is retained so a response can be made. It remains within the site team unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.

Data We Gather Automatically

Loading a page can cause the servers to receive routine technical information about the visit:

  • Page-view dates and times
  • Your device's assigned IP address
  • Pages viewed and the time spent on them
  • Browser name and version
  • Device category and operating system
  • A referring website, when one exists

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files placed on a device. They help show aggregate traffic patterns, including popular pages and points where visits end. Analytics providers assist with that measurement. You may block cookies through browser settings, though doing so can change how some site features work.

What We Do With This Data

  • Routing a query to the partner that provides the selected search tool
  • Finding and repairing technical faults
  • Maintaining site availability, speed, and operation
  • Measuring which pages are useful and which need improvement
  • Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Buchanan County Criminal History does not build, maintain, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to records held by the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office, the court clerks in Grundy, the Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. CCRE dissemination is restricted by Virginia Code § 19.2-389, and it is not an unrestricted anonymous public database. This site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report or a record about someone else.

Third-Party Search Partners

Independent companies operate the search boxes shown on this site. A query submitted there is subject to that provider's privacy policy rather than this policy. The provider controls retention and sharing of data on its systems, so read its policy before sending a search.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to Buchanan County offices, Virginia court portals, state agencies, legal-aid organizations, or outside search services. Once you leave this site, the destination's privacy terms govern. Review them before providing personal information.

Some advertising partners may use their own systems to follow activity across websites and tailor ads. That tracking is controlled by those partners.

Who Might See Your Data

Personal data is not sold. Information may still be disclosed to:

  • Analytics providers that measure traffic and site performance
  • Search partners that process a query submitted through their tool
  • Government or law-enforcement bodies when valid legal process requires disclosure
  • Advertising networks that serve ads on these pages

How We Protect Your Data

Standard security measures are used to protect collected information. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, however, so a breach cannot be ruled out.

Users Under 18

This site is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than 18. If a minor is believed to have supplied data, request its deletion.

Your Data Rights

Your location and applicable law may provide added rights over personal data. Virginia's Freedom of Information Act, Code § 2.2-3700 et seq., governs access to qualifying records held by public bodies; it does not convert this private site into a Buchanan County agency. Virginia Code § 19.2-389 separately limits dissemination of CCRE criminal-history information. Subject to the law that applies to a request, you may:

  • Request deletion of personal data
  • Ask what personal information is held about you
  • Seek correction of inaccurate information
  • Opt out of certain processing where that right applies

Updates to This Policy

This policy may be revised. A new version becomes available on this page and carries a replacement effective date.
