About Buchanan County Criminal History

Buchanan County criminal records are divided among offices in Grundy, Vansant, and statewide Virginia systems. The court clerks hold case files, the sheriff keeps agency-created reports, and the Virginia Department of State Police maintains the Central Criminal Records Exchange and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. We built this private reference site to make those separate routes easier to understand and to help readers identify the official office, portal, address, or phone line that fits their record question.

Why We Built This Site

No single Buchanan County office holds every part of a criminal history. The Circuit Court clerk in Grundy keeps felony trial files and expungement petitions, while the General District clerk handles misdemeanor and traffic files plus felony preliminary proceedings. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office in Vansant is the proper starting point for sheriff-created incident, arrest, booking, and warrant material. Official Virginia criminal-history checks come from the Virginia Department of State Police, Criminal Justice Information Services Division, through the Central Criminal Records Exchange. State custody and supervision records belong to the Virginia Department of Corrections. This site brings those official channels, request steps, and scope limits into one clear reference.

What We Cannot Do

This is a privately run reference site, not part of Buchanan County, the Town of Grundy, a Virginia court, a law-enforcement office, or any state agency. Its role has firm limits:

  • We cannot issue certified court papers, criminal-history records, or other official copies
  • We cannot submit a VFOIA request, sealing matter, expungement petition, or other filing for a visitor
  • We cannot run a State Police check or retrieve an official record for another person
  • We cannot interpret a charge, warrant, disposition, or clearing law as legal advice
  • We cannot promise that an agency's hours, fees, or procedures have not changed

An official copy must come from the Buchanan County clerk or sheriff, the Virginia State Police, or another agency that maintains the original record.
